You can replace the alternator without removing the engine, the decklid and the shroud.... here's how.

1) remove the outer half of the alternator pulley.

2) Get a 36mm socket and a 1/2" drive breaker bar and reach around the front of the engine and put the socket on the nut holding the fan.

3) use a large adjustable wrench and grab the back half of the pulley on the 2 flat spots and break the nut loose with the breaker bar. Now remove the nut and the large washer.

4) remove the strapthat hold the alternator to the stand. Also remove the (4) 10mm bolts.

5) Now... here's the trick. Pull the alternator forward and tip it down so you can get a 10mm wrench on each of the 2 studs that hold the alternator to the backing plate. When you've removed both nuts... pull the alternator out.

Pretty slick

To reinstall... just reverse these steps.

Make sure you get the large 36mm nut on tight. Or it might come loose.
